Personalized Emergency Contact Bracelets: Tips From a Mom
I, Rachel, am the owner and operator of RapidWristbands.com and also a mom of young children. I know how stressful it can be to worry about what will happen if your young child, who may not have learned their parents' phone numbers yet, gets separated from you while out on an activity, an errand, or a trip. Here's a few tips from what I have learned when using personalized silicone wristbands and personalized Tyvek wristbands to keep my young children safe.
Bright colors: Bright colors help you easily spot your child in a crowd or from far away if they get separated from you. In our order form you can also choose different colors in the same band design to get your children's favorite colors! To be a cohesive unit, some families choose to do one color for the whole family to make it very easy to spot a specific color while out and about.
Child won't wearing things on their wrists? Tyvek wristbands are a great option! Inexpensive, waterproof, non-rippable, these wristbands can be placed on a child's wrists OR ankles, depending on the child's preference or based on whether you think they'll be able to try to take it off their wrists themselves. For children with sensory issues, putting a Tyvek wristband on their ankle and then distracting them from the sensation usually leads to better results of the child leaving the safety band on than trying to keep the band on their wrist where it's a constant sensation in their eyesight.
What size to get? Child-size wristbands at RapidWristbands.com are 7 inches in circumference. Take a piece of string and measure your child's wrist and also the largest part of their hand. The band should be smaller than the largest part of their hand to ensure the bracelet does not fall off while the child wears it. Is your child's hand much smaller than 7 inches? Keep us in mind for the near future - kids grow surprisingly fast! In the meantime, Tyvek bands are great because you can customize the size to each child.
Don't make the Tyvek bands too tight. Position the wristband around the wearer’s wrist at the desired tightness. Tyvek wristbands are typically designed to be non-adjustable once applied, so ensure it is positioned correctly. Double-check that the wristband is comfortably snug around the wearer’s wrist. It should be tight enough to stay in place but not so tight as to be uncomfortable.
Don't loose them! Tyvek bands are a one-time use band but if you don't think you can keep up with where the bands end up, you can have one for each time and use them as disposable safety products. Rachel said, "I use personalized silicone wristbands for my children and when we get home from out and about, I have my kids give me their bands immediately and then keep them in one specific spot in the kitchen so that I know where they are when we need them next." You can also get a set to keep in your car!
What style to use? For low visibility but extreme durability, Rachel suggests using the Debossed wristband style ("engraved") or the Embossed wristband style ("raised") for silicone wristbands. These styles include no ink and as the design is part of the silicone mold, it will last forever and it is also more low-key and less visible for strangers to observe. Personalized Tyvek wristbands are also a cost-effective style for one-time use bands.
What information to include? Rachel used a simple design on the band: Front message: Last Name, Back message: Mom's phone number. She added a cute clip art to make the bracelet feel more child friendly, they were excited to have a dinosaur on their special bracelet or a flower. Keeping the message simple gave Rachel peace of mind, knowing that the important emergency information was present but wasn't information that anyone who saw the child could easily use for nefarious reasons. On a budget? It is hard to put a price on the safety of your children, but to to cut the cost of your order, consider using only one design: use your last name and phone number only so you can use it for all of your children! (See #7 above about the additional safety reasons behind this choice!) If you were going to make a different band design for each of your children to have their own name, you'd need to create the band, add it to the cart, then go back to the order page to design the next band's message. Personalized Tyvek wristbands are also a cost-effective style for one-time use bands.
Latex Free: Silicone is hypoallergenic, meaning it is unlikely to cause allergic reactions in most people. This makes silicone wristbands safe and comfortable for prolonged wear, even for individuals with sensitive skin.
Sensitive Skin: Rachel's child has sensitive skin and she shared the following insight, "After wearing a wristband for a few days, my daughter's wrist got a little red. I realized that she'd been sweating and the wristband had kept some of the sweat between the band and the skin. After this, I made sure my daughter took the band off after sweating or just kept her wrist clean and dry by making sure her wrist was dry after washing her hands. We had no problems since"
